What is Spinal Manipulation?

Probably the most common, and as a result the most well-known, methods of therapy among chiropractic doctors is spinal manipulation. Most people know it from its less aggressive sounding name of “chiropractic adjustment”.

The purpose of spinal manipulation is to restore mobility in the joint through a gentle application of controlled force in the joints that experience restriction in their movement. These restrictions can be the result of improperly lifting heavy items, continuous stress factors, sitting at your desk without a chair support and even major trauma like a sports injury or car accident. Most people can experience inflammation, pain and/or reduced use of the joint.

Spinal manipulation restores mobility, relaxes muscles and reduces the pain in the affected area. Some patients can experience minor discomfort, especially if it is their first time, however that usually dissipates within a 24-hour time frame.

Chiropractic is a safe and effective option of pain management that does not rely on prescription medication. A chiropractor’s hands on approach in an examination allows for proper assessment and diagnosis to ensures that spinal manipulation will be of benefit to reducing pain as part of the treatment plan.
